Report # 01 on LATINO FILM FESTIVALOverview


Twenty-six years ago (in 1985), a bunch of people got together to start the Chicago LATINO FILM FESTIVALIt started off small, with just 500 people watching 14 movies that were projected onto a concrete wall rather than a screen...

...  From those humble beginnings, the operation grew into what is now known as the INTERNATIONAL LATINO CULTURAL CENTER (ILCC), headquartered at 676 N LaSalle St. (Suite 520) in Chicago;  phone # 312-409-1757;  their web-site (which has a daily schedule of films available) is http://www.latinoculturalcenter.org/ ... 

...  This is how their literature describes their operation:

“ ...  The ILCC is a pan-Latino, nonprofit, multidisciplinary arts organization dedicated to developing, promoting and increasing awareness of Latino cultures by presenting a wide variety of art forms and education including film, music, dance, visual arts, comedy and theater...

“ ...  Imperative to the ILCC mission is to increase cultural opportunities for the Latino community, as well as, create a cultural dialogue amongst Latinos and non-Latinos to discuss universal cross-cultural experiences. ”

...  One of the most “visible” examples of the ILCC on Chicago’s stage is their continuing production of the Chicago LATINO FILM FESTIVAL (CLFF).  The 27th Festival will run from Friday, April 1 thru Friday April 14... 

...  The Festival this year will feature Special  Segments on:  WOMEN IN FILM (with 18 Feature films produced by Latinas, + 11 Short films);  GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender), with 8 Feature films;  ANIMATION (with 1 Feature film {from Peru} + 8 Short films);  and MADE IN the USA (consisting of 9 Feature films & 16 Short films)...   

...  The films will mainly be shown at the Landmark CENTURY Centre Cinema (2828 N. Clark St.;  in 3 different theaters), and at the INSTITUTO CERVANTES (31 W. Ohio St.)...

There will be 3 Special EVENTS during this year’s Festival:

...  On Friday, April 1OPENING Night, “Tribute To Argentina”, Sponsored by the Consulate General of Argentina.  The film is NO RETURN” (“SIN RETORNO”) from Director Miguel Cohan.  This 106-minute movie concerns the lives of 3 men linked by a hit-and-run car accident...


...  The film will start at 6 pm at the AMC River East 21 (322 E. Illinois).  There will then be a Cocktail Reception and Live Entertainment down the street at the River East Art Center (435 W. Illinois).  Tickets are $ 75 /  or $ 65 for ILCC members.

[ ...  On April 3rd, the film alone will be shown at the Century Centre (at 8:45 pm), and on April 8th at the Genesee Theatre (at 7 pm), at the “General Admission” price... ]

...  On Wednesday, April 6:  “BRAZILIAN Night  / Noite Do Brasil”, sponsored by the Consulate General of Brazil.  The film is LOVE IS ALL WE NEED”  /  “NÃO SE PODE VIVIR SEM AMOR” by Director Jorge Durán.  This involves a man who goes to Rio trying to find his father who’s disappeared.


...  The film will start at 6 pm at the AMC 600 (600 N. Michigan, with the entrance at Ohio and Rush).  There will then be a Cocktail Reception and Live Entertainment down the street at Texas de Brazil (51 E. Ohio).  Tickets are $ 75 /  or $ 65 for ILCC members.

...  On Wednesday, April 13CLOSING Night  / Noche MexicanaThe film is CHICOGRANDE”, by Director Felipe Cazals.  This is about how U.S. troops try to capture Pancho Villa in Mexico after he invaded Columbus, New Mexico in the early 1900’s.    


...  The film will start at 6 pm at the AMC River East 21 (322 E. Illinois).  There will then be a Cocktail Reception and Live Entertainment down the street at the River East Art Center (435 W. Illinois).  Tickets are $ 75 /  or $ 65 for ILCC members

...  Starting in 1999, the Festival has presented its GLORIAaward to individuals and institutions as a special recognition for their “outstanding contributions to the Latino arts”...

...  This year, the Career Achievement award will be presented to Mr. DAMIÁN ALCÁZAR of Mexico during the special “CLOSING NIGHT” ceremony on April 13th...

...  He was born in Michoacan, has appeared in more than 30 films, and has been a 4-time winner of Mexico’s Ariel Award as Best Actor (besides winning awards in other countries)...

...  Mr. Alcázar has appeared in such films as “THE CRIME OF FATHER AMARO” (“EL CRIMEN DEL PADRE AMARO”), “HEROD’S LAW” (“LA LEY DE HERODES”), “SANTANAS” (from Colombia), and “THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA:  PRINCE CASPIAN”... 

...  This year, the Festival will show 3 of his more recent films:  “EL ÚLTIMO COMANDANTE” (from Costa Rica), “GARCIA” (from Colombia), and “CHICOGRANDE” (from Mexico, as seen in the photo below)...

As to the “regularly scheduled” FEATURE films in the Festival, Argentina has 7, Bolivia has 1, Brazil has 5, Chile has 4, Colombia has 5, Costa Rica has 3, Cuba has 3, the Dominican republic has 1, Ecuador has 2, Guatemala has 3, Haiti has 1, Mexico has 6, Nicaragua has 1, Paraguay has 1, Peru has 6, Portugal has 1, Puerto Rico has 3, Spain has 8, Uruguay has 1, the U.S. has 7, and Venezuela has 3...    

...  As to the “regularly scheduled” SHORT films in the Festival, Argentina has 8, Brazil has 5, Ecuador has 2, Mexico has 6, Nicaragua has 1, Peru has 1, Portugal has 1, Puerto Rico has 1, Spain has 8, the U.S. has 14, and Venezuela has 5...

...  The FEATURE films fall under the CATEGORIES (described in the Festival Schedule) of:  Action / Adventure, Animation, Comedy, Documentary (including Historical), Drama (including Political), Family (1 from Puerto Rico), Surrealism (1 from Mexico), and Thriller / Suspense...

...  The CLFF wants to highlight the importance of the artistic & educational value of all films.  Accordingly, the Festival is noncompetitive, outside of its “Audience Choice Award” (which is determined by the filmgoers at the Fest)...

Festival Pass (12 Admissions) =  $100 / or $80 for ILCC Members / Students / Seniors / Disabled.

General Admission =  $11 each /  or $10 each for ILCC Members / Students / Seniors / Disabled.

Special Events (as detailed above) =  $75  /  or $65 for ILCC Members.

Purchase at Theater Information Desk = cash only.

How to Buy Film Tickets
  • Film tickets can be purchased at Box Office one hour prior to film screening
  • Landmark tickets available for purchase at www.LandmarkTheatres.com - for expedited service, redeem at available ticket kiosks
  • Instituto film tickets available for purchase at Box Office – cash only


  Matinees & Weekend  (Saturday and Sunday)  =
  • Weekday Matinee: General Admission film tickets $6 before 5:00 p.m.
     Weekend Matinee: General Admission film tickets $6 only to first film screening of the day
  • Matinee discount only good for Landmark Century Centre Cinema and Instituto Cervantes


Student Tuesdays
  • On April 5th and April 12th  = students pay half of general admission film tickets $6
  • Valid student ID must be presented at time of purchase / one discounted ticket per purchase 
Merchandise
  • Film Festival T-shirt =            $ 15
  • Film Festival Poster =            $   5
  • Purchase merchandise at theater’s Information Desk – cash only




Ticket / Merchandise Policy
  • Tickets and merchandise purchased from the International Latino Cultural Center (ILCC) and participating theaters are non-refundable or exchangeable
  • ILCC is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged tickets/merchandise
  • Tickets are subject to convenience charges
  • Valid student ID must be presented to receive student discount
  • ILCC member ID must be presented at time of purchase to receive applicable discount
