Review of film: “PUSS IN BOOTS” = A “PREQUEL” of SEQUELS

2011, 10-22:

Review of film:  PUSS IN BOOTS”  = A PREQUEL of SEQUELS

This 90-minute PG-rated film (directed by CHRIS MILLER) is, in-effect, a PREQUELdesigned to give the “background” of a character named Puss which appeared in 2 animated SEQUEL films— SHREK 2in 2004 & SHREK THE THIRDin 2007...

...  The swashbuckling cat named “Puss” was added as a “side” character in those films, & was voiced by ANTONIO BANDERAS...  Because it proved very popular with the general public, it’s now gotten its “OWN” movie:

...  Here, we meet-up with a “YOUNGER” Puss (again voiced by Antonio)...  Puss is a confident male cat, & also proud of the fancy BOOTS he wears...

...  We soon see him in an old-West-style BAR-ROOM with some “tough” characters who start to make fun of him...   Antonio fancies himself a “cat-ty” LADIES-man, & does not tolerate anyone making “demeaning” remarks about him...

...  He soon warns the others in the bar that they’d be wise to NOT kid about the idea that he might supposedly be “chasing” any ball of YARN!...  When they persist in their demeanor, he soon brandishes his sword & shows them he’s SERIOUS...

...  Antonio eventually meets an old FRIEND of his, namely, HUMPTY-DUMPTY (voiced by ZACH GALIFIANAKIS)...

...  Humpty has been engaged in some “improper” behavior, & the law authorities --  as shown by the Comandante (voiced by GUILLERMO DEL TORO) -- want him to “PAY” for his transgressions...

...  Not wanting to see anything bad happen to a buddy, Antonio uses FORCE to “SAVE” Zach from his fate...

...  In time, Antonio ends-up fighting a MASKED black-clothed cat who turns out to be Kitty Softpaws (voiced by SALMA HAYEK), who isn’t impressed by his conceited self-important behavior...

...  Once Humpty is “freed”, he eventually makes clear he has an “AGENDA”:  he wants Antonio’s help in getting possession of some Magic glowing BEANS...

...  Those beans have the ability to grow a gigantic BEANSTALK which will lead up to the clouds where a GIANT lives...

...  The giant owns a proverbial “Golden GOOSE” which lays golden EGGS--  & it’s that super-valuable goose that Zach wants to get POSSESSION of because it could provide him with an “EASY LIFE”...

...  For some not-super-clear reason, adventurous Antonio decides to JOIN Zach in his quest, & Salma also agrees to accompany them...

...  Naturally, there’s a major PROBLEM they need to solve:  the beans are in control of a big TOUGH couple I call the HILL Gang”:  JACK (voiced by BILLY BOB THORNTON) – who says he HATES cats -- & his companion JILL (voiced by AMY SEDARIS)...

...  Billy Bob has the beans encased in a box “locked” around his HAND which holds them, protected by Jill...

...   He & Jill are riding thru the countryside in a stagecoach type vehicle, & Antonio & the others ride horses to chase AFTER them...

...  Well, by “hook” & via crook, Antonio’s group GETS the beans, & uses them to create the beanstalk to get them into the CLOUDS to try to get the Giant’s GOOSE (literally besides “figuratively”!)...

...  Will Antonio be able to get CONTROL of the goose (using disguises, etc.)--  or will there be a CAT-astrophe?!...

...  Is Zach “HIDING” any vital information from Antonio?...

...  Will Salma prove to be a CAT-alyst for a closer relationship with “sexy” Antonio?...  Or will things turn CAT-aclysmic?...

...  There’s a fair amount of HUMOR (some of it a bit “adult” in allusions) in the movie--  tho the story-line is somewhat “WEAK” & overly far-fetched in its contrived plot...

...  The main thing of special value here is the clever & well-done 3-D (with quite effective DEPTH) & its fine ANIMATION (such as the “chase” & fight scenes, + “simple” things like Antonio’s humorously slurping MILK from a glass in the bar-room)...

...  Because it’s a lot of FUN overall, I’m rating it at 8.00 out of 10 stars...

Review of film: “PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3” + info on some movie SOUVENIRS given away at a screening

2011, 10-18:

Review of film:  “PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3

+ Info on some movie SOUVENIRS given away at a screening

In 2007, a fairly cheaply-made horror film came out called “PARANORMAL ACTIVITY”.  It became a huge hit, which, of course, led to SEQUELS...

...  It was such a comparative phenomenon, that it was commented about during a 2009 STATE OF THE MOVIE INDUSTRYpanel discussion I reported on (as seen at =    http://voice-of-film.blogspot.com/2010/10/chronicling-panel-discussion-state-of.html ), wherein I stated this:

“ ...  But, sometimes, buyers see a film they like that they find best to NOT remake.  [One of the panelists] cited the example of ‘PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, which, according to many who’d seen it, has ‘seemingly NO production values’, but which was acquired to be distributed ‘AS-IS’, feeling the low-budget feel of the film would --  like the ‘BLAIR WITCH PROJECT [which used the idea of fake ‘found’ footage in 1999] --  be a ‘SELLING’ point in itself to the public.  And, that’s exactly what’s happened with it!… ”

...  In 2009, a “# 2” SEQUEL to the first “PARANORMAL” came out, which I Reviewed (as seen at = http://voice-of-film.blogspot.com/2010/10/review-paranormal-activity-2.html )...

...  To no great surprise, a 3rd movie in the “series” was released on 10-21-11, designed to be in-essence a “PREQUEL” explaining the “beginnings” underpinning the first 2 films....

...  That 84-minute R-rated version (with the tagline “It runs in the FAMILY.”) was directed by HENRY JOOST & ARIEL SCHULMAN, & I’m now going to offer my thoughts on it...

...  At certain points, we see two grown-up SISTERS in the family we’d met “before” (in the other films):  Katie (KATIE FEATHERSTON) & her younger sister Kristie Rey (SPRAGUE GRAYDEN)...

...  For most of this new movie, the setting is in 1988.  We are introduced to those girls at a time when they were young KIDS.  We meet their videographer father named Dennis (CHRISTOPHER NICHOLAS SMITH) & his wife Julie (LAUREN BITTNER)...

... They live in a fairly fancy (expansive) new house with their two daughters, Katie (played as a youngster by CHLOE CESEGERY) & her younger sister Kristie Rey (JESSICA TYLER BROWN as the child)...

...  The girls love to have fun together (such as at playing “house” with tea-pouring type ceremonies & the like), & seem to have vivid imaginations...

...  Little Jessica appears to have an “IMAGINARYfriend she talks to, seemingly named “Toby”...  At first, her parents find that “cute”--  but it soon starts to “CONCERN” them when she seems to truly BELIEVE the unseen friend exists & is LIVING in the HOUSE...

...  Naturally, given the genre, a series of “STRANGE” things start happening in the home, & that causes Christopher to feel that he’s sensing (as he comments at one point) “a real-life POLTERGEIST”...

...  That encourages Chris to work with his film-making assistant, Randy Rosen (DUSTIN INGRAM, seen as the star of “MEET MONICA VELOUR” I reviewed), in setting-up a series of video CAMERAS in the house to capture some proof of what’s going on...

...  One camera is set up in the girls’ bedroom (with the ability to film 6 hours of VHS video at a time)...

...  And, another camcorder is set up in the kitchen area, using a jerry-rigged oscillating-fan base to “sweep” the area to also give a view of the living room as it moves back-&-forth (left-to-right & then back again)...

...  Chris & Dustin later REVIEW the date-&-time-imprinted images, & are disturbed to see certain things:

...  There are strange NOISES that occur at nite, + unusual occurrences such as LIGHTS suddenly going on for no apparent “reason”...

...  Increasingly bothered by events, Chris eventually starts to look in the cubbyhole-type CLOSET in the girls’ room, since Jessica indicates invisible “Toby” is often in there...

...  Of course, there’s an ESCALATION in the disturbances at the house:

...  Hanging lights start FALLING in various rooms...

...  A babysitter gets SCARED by noises & movements as she studies at the kitchen table...

...  As witnessed by Lauren, items (like a green storage box) suddenly start FLYING AROUND in the girls’ room (& elsewhere)...

...  And, electrical sockets start EXPLODING while strange NOISES keep occurring...

...  As things become worse, Lauren worriedly announces at one point, “We’re getting OUT of here!...”

...  Could it be the “noises” & “Toby” & strange happenings will “FOLLOW” them where they go?...

...  Is it likely some other EVIL” elements will “hover” around in their lives?...

...  Will any of the family members prove to be in mortal DANGER?!...

...  As regular readers of this blog may know, I’m NOT a big fan of the “horror” genre, particularly in the way its “modern” incarnations are usually suffused with “SLASHER” type goriness (which I deeply dislike)...

...  However, this movie for the most part is in the more-acceptable “OLDER” style, wherein it’s NOT blood-splattered & it mainly concentrates on “UNSEEN” types of “hands” (& other elements) causing the scariness...

...  There are the usual typical “HOLES” in the plot.  For example, Chris’ business is making videos...  Yet, rather than simply install a SEPARATE camera in the living room area, he devises an “alternating-image” (moving fan-base) setup wherein he keeps “MISSING” vital happenings that could give him “clues”...  But, that’s not unexpected..

...  The acting is decent, with the young girls being especially good...

...  The SPECIAL EFFECTS are “OK”:  they’re fairly “LOW-level” (rather than cutting-edge) for this day & time, but there were a few instances where I could hear people “OOH!” & “AH!” in surprise & pleasure...

...  Since it WASN’T unduly “bloody” or gory & had some passable “frightening” effects, I’m rating this at 7.00 out of 10 stars (...  tho, in my opinion, it’s NOWHERE NEAR “worthy” of the huge grosses it’s been piling up from the viewing public!)...

Info on some movie SOUVENIRS given away at a screening

When I went to an advance screening of the film in Chicago, they had a special presentation by the B96 WBBM-FM RADIO people...  The event was so popular, they had to turn away around 100-200 people in the “overflow” crowd...

...  Host DOUGIE STYLZ spent like an hour at the Webster Place theater engaging in various “CONTESTS” and “games” with the audience, giving away various prizes to people who “won”, audience members with birthdays or anniversaries, people who agreed to “meet” an unknown audience member onstage, etc....

...  They talked about the live performers (Joe Jonas, Selena Gomez, Enrique Iglesias, Jason Derulo, Karmin, etc.) who’d be at their upcoming December 17thJINGLE BASH” performance show in Rosemont...

...  The earliest “winners” got PARANORMAL”-related merchandise such as CAPS , + there were some large radio-station plastic CUPS...

...  Most people got POSTERS from the movie, as shown by the photo below of attendee Carlos...

...  Everyone got something, such as special movie-related T-shirts emblazoned on the front with the movie’s poster image of 2 girls sleeping in their beds {as shown below}...

...  And, the back had the special message “I saw it first.  OCT 18, 2011 PM 10:00:00.” (although, technically, the movie was shown to at least one other different audience the day BEFORE at another Chicago-area theater)...

...  But, all-in-all, a very SUCCESSFUL promotional effort:  the audience was kept entertained in the hour before the movie started, & everyone was pleased that they got some “SOUVENIR” from a film that most seemed to enjoy attending..

Review of film: “NORMAN”

2011, 10-25:

Review of film:  NORMAN

This 99-minute R-rated movie was directed by JONATHAN SEGAL...

...  Before seeing the movie which was described as a “comedy”, I was a bit “LEERY” about it in that the synopsis made it sound somewhat uncomfortably “WEIRD” if not downright “screwy”...

...  But, when I saw it, I found the essence of it was considerably “DEEPER” than the impression given by the general “plot” description:

...  Norman Long (DAN BYRD) has had a very HARD time lately:  his mother had recently DIED in a CAR crash (which has made him uneager to drive any vehicle), & he’s become a quite troubled young man...

...  He lives with his doctor father Doug (RICHARD JENKINS).  We soon see that he takes CARE of his dad, because Richard is suffering from STOMACH CANCER & seemingly has only MONTHS left to live...

...  Dan in time goes WITH Richard when he drives to the hospital...

...  Dan wants him to agree to try some more CHEMO treatments, but Richard feels that’s useless & spends most of his time weakly LAYING around the house, with no energy to “do” much of anything...

...  Adding to all that is the fact that Dan is somewhat “nerdy”, & he has few real FRIENDS in the world.  His one real buddy, James (BILLY LUSH), regularly DRIVES Dan to school to be helpful to him...

...  But 17-year-old Dan is a basically reticent guy who’s uncomfortable with TALKING about his OWN life, & he’s never even TOLD Billy about the difficulties his dad was going thru...

...  At school, Dan doesn’t particularly FIT-IN”, & he at one point tells his dad that he gets “BEATEN-UP” at times there...

...  In a school class, he’s very reluctant to answer a studies question posed to him by his teacher, Mr. Angelo (ADAM GOLDBERG)...

...  When Dan finally replies & talks about how life just seems to be a journey of “birth to DEATH”, not knowing his student’s “situation”, Adam comments on how Dan comes across as having a very “BLEAK” outlook...

...  While going thru the school hallways at one point, Dan accidentally bumps into a cute new girl there named Emily Parrish (EMILY VANCAMP, who’d starred in the TV show “EVERWOOD” as Amy Abbott)...

...  Dan is clearly “taken” with how nice she looks , & promptly works to help her PICK-UP her books which’d fallen on the floor...

...  As she walks away to hurry to her next class, he talks to himself about how she never even thanked him--  but then she surprises him by coming back & very warmly DOING just that (which impresses him a lot)...

...  Since Dan is fairly SHY & lonely, he is very happy when Emily goes out of her way to TALK to him after that, & pleased she enjoys his kidding-along with words from a MONTY PYTHON skit which she also enjoys...

...  At one point in their relationship, he tells her he had a past history of trying to physically HURT (= cut) himself due to general unhappiness in life--  but she doesn’t seem to realize he’s being TRUTHFUL in his words (sort of taking them as a sarcastic “joke” on his part)...

...  Dan keeps growing ever more upset at the continuously DETERIORATING condition of his father Richard, who he uncomplainingly keeps CARING for (cooking for him, etc.)...

...  He finds some new X-rays of Richard’s condition, & promptly hides them in his school bag (to look at them in more detail later) as he hurries out to go to school...

...  When Billy arrives to drive him to school, Dan is surprised by the way he TALKS to him, namely, angrily complaining about how he’s recently been LATE or not around for such trips to & from school...

...  Dan tries to tell him, he’d been having some HARD times lately, which Billy didn’t know about or understand...  Hearing that, Billy irately “challenges” him by saying, OK, so, TELL me what I [supposedly] ‘don’t know’!...”

...  Not expecting such a response, but not up to going into “DETAILS” about his dad’s condition & what he’d been going thru, Dan speaks WITHOUT THINKING first, saying, he had X-rays with him (which he pulls out) of stomach CANCER!...

...  Distressed by what had transpired, rather than go into “details”, Dan sort of tries to get “away” from the subject & encourage Billy to DROP the subject by saying, HE’S the one with cancer that will only allow a few more MONTHS to live, so life had been difficult lately...

...  Dan immediately realizes he’d picked a BAD thing to blurt out, & tries to “AVOID” talking any more on the subject..  But, by this time, they’d arrived at school & he saw he’d stunned his friend Billy, & he tries to hurry AWAY from the car, hoping Billy will forget or ignore what had gone on...

...  Dan chances to meet Emily as he enters school...  But then, BILLY comes rushing up to him, saying he hadn’t REALIZED that Dan was going thru CANCER problems, & to please FORGIVE him for the way he’d complained to him earlier!...

...  Dan is very discombobulated by what had gone on, UPSET that EMILY had heard Billy’s words, & tells Billy please, just DROP the subject & don’t go speaking to anyone ELSE about what they’d discussed (which Billy agrees to do)...

...  But, EMILY starts becoming sort of “SOLICITOUS” towards him, even tho she doesn’t go into any “detailed” discussion of what she’d overheard...

...  Quickly, Dan notices OTHER people start being unusually KIND towards him in school--  including people who’d been “harassing” him in the past!...

...  He quickly deduces that Billy has TOLD others about what he’d said concerning cancer, confronts him about that--  & Billy apologizes after admitting he HAD told others because he just couldn’t keep it to “himself”...

...  Dan finds himself “between a rock & a HARD place”:  rather than show himself to be a LIAR & go into unpleasantpersonal” details about his DAD, he just quietly “ACCEPTS” the unusual KINDNESSES that people were suddenly giving him...

...  But, that unexpectedly causes him even MORE problems:  he was deeply appreciative of the way EMILY had been sweet towards him even before she’d heard what Billy said about “his” cancer, & he finds it very hard to pull “AWAY” from the INCREASEDINTEREST she keeps showing in him...

...  It means so much to Dan (with all the unhappy things in his life) that Emily seems to truly CARE about him as a person--  but, he also feels very guilty that he’s been DECEIVING her & others (tho that had not been any initial “intention” of his)...

...  As they talk in her car near a waterfall, Emily doesn’t see that he’s crying when she keeps talking about how “BRAVE” & “HONEST” he is...

...  As time goes on, Dan’s dad keeps WORSENING health-wise...  Dan feels good that he’s able to give Richard some happiness by telling him how he’s now got a GIRLFRIEND in life, which Richard is thrilled to hear...

...  Emily keeps encouraging Dan to become ROMANTICALLY involved...

...  That means a lot to him, since he so much needs warmth with all the sadnesses in his life...

...  But, at the same time, he keeps feeling progressively more EMBARRASSED at the way he feels he has to keep “putting-off” her interest in meeting his FAMILY (which only consists of his dying dad)...

...  We see how Dan keep trying to get more medical help for Richard, which he REFUSES to accept...

...  All that leaves Dan feeling ever more DISTRAUGHT & helpless in life--  especially because he’s kept “going-along” with his inadvertent ruse to school people about his OWN health, including having shaved his HEAD as if he was the one suffering from CHEMO problems...

...  What will we see happen to Richard about his battle with cancer?...

...  Will Dan ever ADMIT to Emily & others that he himself does NOT have cancer, &, if so, HOW will he handle that & what will the “REACTIONS” be?...

...  As I indicated earlier, this film has been “marketed” as a sort of COMEDY— tho it’s really a DRAMA with some periodic comedic “undertones”...

...  I found it to be an unexpectedly “HONEST” portrayal of a young person dealing with some very tough times in his young life, & how people “RESPOND” to him given “changing” circumstances...

...  Adam usually seems to play very obnoxious characters (from his work as Chandler’s roommate on TV’s “FRIENDS” on forward)...  But here, he comes across with some geniality & kindness...  The “minor” roles are also well-cast...

...  Altho Richard’s role is not huge, I felt he demonstrated a fine believable SENSITIVITY & integrity in his portrayal...

...  To me, the most impressive thing is the EXCEPTIONAL acting by DAN & EMILY (the latter whom won a Festival award as BEST Actress in the 2010 SAN DIEGO Film Festival)...

...  While the movie may seem a “small” work, I found it to be LARGE in the impressive way it handled a story of people dealing with difficult times & CONFLICTING emotions...

...  I thus wanted to let people KNOW about the high-quality work in this limited-release “slice-of-life” film, which I’m rating at 8.25 out of 10 stars...
